Export iCloud vs. downloading from iCloud.com
iCloud.com is fine for grabbing a few photos. For a whole library, the 1,000-item limit turns it into a weekend project.

The math for a typical library
A 15,000-item library means at least 15 separate selections and downloads on iCloud.com — each one selected by hand without overlapping or skipping, extracted, and checked. Large ZIP downloads in a browser can also fail part-way, forcing you to start that batch again.
With Export iCloud it’s one click on All, then Start Export.
When iCloud.com is enough
For a handful of photos — an album for a print shop, a few videos to edit — iCloud.com is quick and needs nothing installed. Select, click the download icon, done.
When to use Export iCloud
Use Export iCloud when you want everything: a full archive, a move to an external drive, or a cleanup to free up iCloud storage. See how to download all your iCloud photos at once.
